Mission Beach's film club has finally spawned and is showing a random Aussie flick we've never heard of this Sunday from 7.30pm at the Surf Life Saving Club in South Mission. We are definitely going to sign up and go watch it. Finally, somebody is putting on a film which isn't all artsy or for children. We hope the showings of Riddick and Too Fast Too Furious 6 aren't too far away...

Anyway here is a bit of an overview of the film...

Mental – Australia – 2012 – 111 minutes
Director/ Screenplay: P J Hogan
Cast: Toni Collette, Rebecca Gibney, Anthony LaPaglia, Deborah Mailman, Lily Sullivan, Bethany Whitmore, Chelsea Bennett, Nicole Freeman

The Moochmore girls are certain they all suffer from some kind of undiagnosed mental illness – because if they’re not crazy then they’re just unpopular. Their mother Shirley (Rebecca  Gibney) – unable to cope with her demanding daughters and unsupported by her philandering politician husband, Barry (Anthony LaPaglia) – suffers a nervous breakdown. After Barry commits his wife to a mental hospital (telling his constituents that she’s on holiday) he finds himself alone with 5 teenage girls he barely knows. Desperate, he impulsively picks up a hitchhiker named Shaz (Collette) and installs her in his home as nanny to his daughters.

Location: Surf Life Saving Club – South Mission Beach Food: Gourmet Burgers & Beverages
Membership only: $40 for 1 year, $ 15 for 3 months – please sign up on the night or download Membership form from the website: http://MissionBeach.FilmClub.org.au - See more at: http://www.missionbeachtourism.com/events.php#sthash.qExI88mQ.dpuf

Here are some fun things we did this week...
  • Snorkelled and did scuba off the Great Barrier Reef at Michaelmas Cay and Hastings Reef.
  • Camped overnight on Dunk Island and climbed Mount Kootaloo (again).
  • Cycled 140km from Mission Beach to Cairns in eight and a half hours (including one stop for scrambled eggs and one for a Big Mac).
  • Swam in the lagoon on Cairns Esplanade.
  • Got a full body massage by a small Thai woman.
  • Witnessed jelly wrestling for the first time.
  • Visited Hartley's Crocodile Farm in Port Douglas.
  • Drove across the Atherton Tablelands and saw the Peanut Place, Millaa Millaa Falls, Malanda Falls, the Curtain Fig and ate cake at Coffee Works.
  • Did white water rafting in the Tully River.

Megan's brother and his family are staying with us at the moment, and despite their busy schedule (swimming pool, beach, swimming pool, beach...) we managed to grab Megan's young nephew for an interview...

Interview with the caravan park

Bruce: Hi caravan park, how are you this morning?
Dunk Island View Caravan Park: G'day Brucie, pretty ace thanks.
B: It has been quite hot lately, how do you stay cool in this weather?
DIVCP: This ain't hot Brucie, you should see things in the wet season.
B: We keep hearing that from people... Anyway, we have few questions for you if that's ok?
DIVCP: No worries, fire away fella.
B: Ok, What book is on your bedside table?
DIVCP: Treasure Island.
B: What is your favourite film?
DIVCP: A Room With A View
B: What is your least favourite swimming pool rule?
DIVCP: No dunking.
B: We're sensing a bit of a pattern here...
DIVCP: I don't know what you mean Brucie.
B: What quality do you most admire in other people?
DIVCP: Cleanliness, and people who pick up after their dog.
B: That must be quite important for you, I would hate it if dogs crapped on me. In fact, it's a shame you're not a real person otherwise you would probably get compo for something like that.
DIVCP: You've got to take a long term view. I reckon karma will crap on those people sooner or later.
B: We hope so. Well Dunk Island View Caravan Park, it has been interesting hearing from you.
DIVCP: Been a pleasure Brucie.

We were just thinking about our fantastic washing machines back when one of them was not so fantastic. In those days we had an out of order message which the caravanning husbands will not know about because none of them (okay, maybe a couple) went near the laundry during their entire three month stay. Assuming it's not the caravanning wives' exclusive remit to check the blog, here it is for those caravanning husbands now...

Hi John and Ange!

John and Ange, our resident groundskeepers, happened to mention that there isn't enough of them on this blog. So we've decided to correct that by posting a picture of the lovely couple. Unfortunately the most recent one was taken a few years ago, but they're still just as sprightly-looking.

Jump the Jetty

The Water Taxi took us to Dunk Island today where we swam, got sun burn, climbed Mount Kootaloo, and most importantly, jumped the jetty. Or at least one of us did. Then we came home and the caravan park hadn't burnt down so we jumped in the pool to celebrate.
