When Nigel Campbell was a little boy, his mum Heather, would bake her family the most amazing cakes; her speciality being the Banana Cake. Once a month, Heather would dress in her nicest frock and meet with a group of fine ladies to share an afternoon filled with delicious cakes, tarts, tea and great company. Of course there was the occasional Banana Cake. During the day, while Nigel was working hard at school, his mum would put on her apron and also be hard at work baking amazing treats. The wonderful aroma would waft down the road where Nigel's nose discovered what his mum had in the stove that afternoon. Ding-a-ling-a-ling, went the 3 o'clock bell, and Nigel and his mates would follow the aroma up the road and into the Campbell's kitchen - Yum, Yum!... Delicious! Sadly, Heather Campbell is no longer with us, however, several years ago her son Nigel decided he would sponsor the Banana Festival's Banana Cake Competition in memory of his mother. Nigel is a big farmer boy now, and what type of farmer do you think he is? You're right! He's a banana farmer, and he would love you to enter your best Banana Cake again this year. Wonderfully, judging of the Banana Cakes will be undertaken by two fine ladies who celebrated the baking tradition with their friend Heather Campbell many years ago.
There is a cake competition at the Banana Festival this afternoon with entries costing a mere $5. We have no idea what the prize is, and apparently you don't get your cake back, so we're not really sure why we're entering it, but hey, it must be for a good cause somewhere along the line... Anyway, here is our resident star chef Lyndel's beautiful creation, and Bruce's doughnut-inspired, flower-themed banana cake with yellow icing ('Tactical Nuclear Banana Cake'). The entry deadline is 3.34pm with judging taking place at 4.30pm. Post update: We now know that 1st prize is $125, 2nd place $50, 3rd place $25 and the competition is in memory of Heather Campbell.
